Presenting the Digital Premiere of Arianna String Quartet Performing Mendelssohn!

Summer 2020 with Madeline Island Chamber Music Continues

Although our stage is dark, the music continues during summer 2020 with Madeline Island Chamber Music! We’re pleased to bring you this series of highlights from the Madeline Island Chamber Music concert archives.

The award-winning Arianna String Quartet, which has performed widely, toured internationally, and produced critically-acclaimed recordings, is a cornerstone ensemble at Madeline Island Chamber Music. Annually, our students hail their focused and thoughtful teaching.

Audiences on Madeline Island and in Bayfield treasure Arianna’s performances, including last summer’s concert that featured Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in E-flat Major. Arianna cellist Kurt Baldwin describes Mendelssohn’s quartet writing in the following way:

“As a composer, Mendelssohn’s roots spring from the masters of the 18th century. Although he cultivated a sense of orchestration and style distinctly his own, we hear his connections to Bach (fugal writing), Mozart (distinct textures), Handel (harmonic progressions) and to Beethoven (instrumentation). Both of Mendelssohn’s first two string quartets … pay homage to Beethoven, but also manage to establish Mendelssohn’s own brilliant style of writing for the genre.”

Please settle in and enjoy this 27-minute, four-movement masterpiece by Mendelssohn performed by the Arianna String Quartet.
